Westerplatte Cruise

A 110-minute journey to the place where history was made

Westerplatte Cruise

Targ Rybny – Stocznia Gdańska – Twierdza Wisłoujście – Westerplatte – Latarnia Morska – Targ Rybny

The cruise to Westerplatte starts from the quay where the Fish Market used to operate. From the starting point there is a beautiful view of the Long Embankment with the Żuraw Gate, the recently restored Granary Island, the National Maritime Museum with the ship Sołdek and the Polish Baltic Philharmonic. We head towards the old shipyard, the Imperial Shipyard, located at the confluence of the Motlawa River and the Dead Vistula. We circumnavigate Ostrow Island, where the Gdansk Shipyard and the Repair Yard are located, via the Kashubian Canal.

On the cruise route we pass industrial wharves with export goods of the largest port in Poland. Dating back to the second half of the 15th century, the Wisłoujście Fortress is a monument of fortification art. Together with the Gull’s Lair, they were built to defend the mouth of the Vistula River and effectively repel the attacks of armies besieging the city.

Westerplatte is a small peninsula where a Military Transit Depot was established between the wars. It was here that the German battleship Schlezwig Holstein fired the first shots, starting the first battle of World War II. The defenders of Westerplatte, with their attitude and determination, gained great fame and the respect of the enemy, and the area was commemorated with the Monument to the Defenders of the Coast.
